Safe Schools and Communities Conference
June 11-12, 2024

Hosted by the Kentucky Center for School Safety

This two-day event is FREE OF CHARGE and is open to principals, law enforcement officers, school administrators, safe school coordinators, DPPs, and school personnel. Attendance at this conference includes membership in the Kentucky Association of School Resource Officers (KYASRO) and the Kentucky DARE Association for law enforcement participants. EILA credit is pending for educators.

Keynote Speakers

Jermaine Galloway (Tall Cop), a national and international expert on drug trends.
Michelle Gay (co-presenter), mother, educator, and co-founder of Safe and Sound Schools, Michele chose to take action after losing her daughter Josephine Grace on December 14, 2012, at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Molly Hudgens (co-presenter), School Counselor, disarmed a student at Sycamore Middle School, author – “Saving Sycamore: The School Shooting that Never Happened.”

Other General Sessions

School Law Update – Wayne Young (General Counsel at KASA) will provide a school law update for school-based law enforcement and school personnel.
School Safety Panel Discussion – An open discussion with panelists (Jon Akers, KCSS Executive Director, Ben Wilcox, School Security Marshal, and Dan Orman, KCSS Training Coordinator) about current school safety concerns in Kentucky.
School Event Safety– A presentation on school event safety planning for athletic events and other high-profile after-school activities will be conducted by safety expert James Stephens.
Update from the School Security Marshal’s Office – The School Security Marshal, Ben Wilcox, will give an update on recent activities.

Additionally, breakout sessions will be offered on June 12th on gang information updates, school-based law enforcement programs, SRO training, and threat assessment. Contact leeann.morrison@eku.edu for more information. Hotel information will be sent in your confirmation letter.
