Good afternoon,

Please see the information below from CISA.  If you have any questions, please follow up with Ethan Walton directly at ETHAN.WALTON@mail.cisa.dhs.gov.

State School Safety Partners,

I hope the start of the new school year is going well. As you may know, the back-to-school season can be a time when schools and districts experience an increase in bomb threats and other anonymous threats. With that in mind, I wanted to ensure you knew about these bomb threat preparedness and response resources that may be helpful to share with your districts:

  • Bomb Threat Guidance – Quick reference guide that provides K-12 leaders with pre-threat preparation, threat assessment considerations, staff response guidelines, and evacuation and shelter-in-place considerations.
  • What to Do: Bomb Threat Video – Demonstrates the procedures school staff should follow during a bomb threat.
  • Bomb Threat Checklist – Provides instructions on how to respond to a bomb threat and what information to gather when bomb threats are received over the phone.
  • Bomb Threat Assessment for Decision Makers Course – Helps K-12 leaders evaluate threats; determine risk level (low, moderate, or high); and consider search, evacuation, and reoccupation actions.
  • K-12 Anonymized Threat Response Guidance – Outlines steps that school leaders can take to assess, respond to, and prevent social media-based and other types of anonymous threats. It also highlights how K-12 schools can work with local law enforcement when threats are received.

The Bombing Prevention Assistance for K-12 Schools two-pager summarizes these and other relevant products, tools, and trainings. Additional resources can be found here.

Please let me know if you have questions or would like additional information on any of these resources. Thank you for your continued partnership and I look forward to connecting with you again soon.

Best regards,
Ethan
