Safe Schools and Communities Conference

June 10-11, 2025

Hosted by the Kentucky Center for School Safety

This two-day event is FREE OF CHARGE and is open to principals, law enforcement officers, school administrators, safe school coordinators, DPPs, and school personnel. Registration will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. Attendance at this conference includes membership in the Kentucky Association of School Resource Officers (KYASRO) and the Kentucky DARE Association for law enforcement participants. EILA credit is pending for educators.

Keynote Speakers

Peter Langman, is a sought-after expert on the psychology of school shooters and other perpetrators of mass violence. His session will focus on understanding the psychology of school shooters and identifying potential school shooters for professionals in mental health, education, and law enforcement. Dr. Langman’s latest book, Warning Signs: Identifying School Shooters Before They Strike, was published in 2021.

Madalena DeAndrea, in this keynote, Madalena DeAndrea deep dives her experience of surviving the Borderline Bar and Grill shooting in Thousand Oaks, CA in November of 2018 where 12 people were tragically killed including a responding Police Officer. Madalena is a current Senior Manager of Strategic Projects, Recovery, and Resiliency for Jeffco Public Schools Department of School Safety; and the daughter of Deputy Chief AJ DeAndrea (Retired) who was in a leadership role in three school shootings that changed the fabric of American society and police response to active shootings around the world. She shares how the protective factors she learned growing up ultimately saved her life and the unfiltered reality of what it takes to experience post-traumatic growth after a profound experience of evil.

Other General Sessions

Additionally, general sessions will be offered from the National Center for Exploited and Missing Children, on event safety, and an update from the School Security Marshal’s Office. Breakout sessions will be offered on SRO training, mapping in schools, student trends in schools, reunification protocols, threat assessment, and other school safety topics.
