Coping with tragic events

From Common Sense Media

As an organization dedicated to improving the lives of children, families, and educators across the country, our hearts are broken. Many members of our staff are parents or caregivers, and we grieve with the families who lost loved ones in the tragic mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, yesterday. This only adds to our heartache following the recent tragedies in Buffalo, New York, and Laguna Woods, California.

We understand how powerless you might be feeling. You may be asking yourself how to talk with your children or your students about what happened. We offer the following resources as support:

For parents and caregivers:
Explaining the News to Our Kids (in English and Spanish)

For educators:
Talking with Students About Shocking or Disturbing News

We’re checking in with our loved ones today as we all grieve another mass shooting—and we hope you are too. Taking breaks from social media and traditional news outlets can help you preserve your mental health as we all mourn.
