 Lockdown Procedure
There are several variations of addressing lockdown procedures when considering the school setting.  Listed below are several ideas that may assist in developing a “lockdown” protocol in a school community.  It is highly recommended that school officials consult with local law enforcement officials to cooperatively develop this protocol.

LOCKDOWN MANDATED BY LAW
Kentucky House Bill 206 mandates every Kentucky school conduct a lockdown annually.

KEY POINTS TO CONSIDER

Here are some key points to consider:

Lockdown (For use to protect building occupants from potential dangers in the building)

When making the announcement to place the school in a lockdown status, it is recommended to not use “code” words, but simply state that “Staff we are in ‘lockdown’ until further notice.”

STEPS AFTER ANNOUNCEMENT OF LOCKDOWN

Once the announcement is made:

·  Assist those needing special assistance

·  Close and lock all windows and doors and do not leave for any reason

·  Cover all room and door windows (some say to uncover windows)*

·  Stay away from all doors and windows and move students to interior walls and drop

·  Shut off lights (some say leave the lights on)*

·  BE QUIET!

·  Wait for further instructions

OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER
Some schools use a card notification system to alert first responders and/or school officials of the status in each room.  The universal colors of green, yellow and red are used.  The card is usually at least 6”X 9” or larger.  During a lockdown the card is either slid under the door or taped to the door window: 1) green to signify all students present; 2) red to signify missing students; 3) yellow to signify that the teacher has additional students under his/her supervision.   The key here is not to put anyone in jeopardy when using the card notification procedure. *

When developing a lockdown protocol, be mindful of different scenarios that will require advanced planning when needing to put the school in lockdown such as: during class changes, during lunch time, recess, during assemblies, during arrival and dismissal times.

Remember, it is critical to work with local responders to fully define and implement a viable plan of action.

* Check with local law enforcement officials regarding this concern.
