The Pupil Transportation Branch currently has
692 state certified driver training instructors.
There are over 13,000 certified school bus
drivers statewide. All driver trainers were
required to initially complete an intense
four-day certification regimen with additional
annual update training. Kentucky is nationally
renowned for its driver training with many
states modeling its’ program. Kentucky has
received numerous awards on the national level
for this program. Everything
you need for training: Forms, certificates,
manuals, incident reports, surveys, and more.

Bullying intervention
training for school
bus drivers -
Two
training modules were jointly created by NAPT, the
Education Department’s Office of Safe and Drug-Free
Schools and Safe and Supportive Schools Technical
Assistance Center. The first module, titled "See
Something, Do Something: Intervening in Bullying
Behavior," will teach drivers what does and does not
constitute bullying, how to respond to the behavior
on or around the bus, and specific strategies for
addressing and reporting bullying as it occurs. The
second module, "Creating a Supportive Bus Climate:
Preventing Bullying," focuses on building mutual
respect on the school bus.
The
training is fully-funded by the Office of Safe and
Drug-Free Schools and is available
free of charge to school districts across the

Every weekday in the school year school
transportation systems in the United States operate
approximately 440,000 yellow school buses to provide
safe transportation for more than 24 million
school-aged children. This synthesis documents the
various safety issues faced by the school bus
industry. Safety issues include each aspect of
school bus operations, including the driver,
environment, equipment/technology, and
organizational design. Information was gathered
through a literature review and a survey on school
bus safety issues that was disseminated to a variety
of professionals associated with school bus

.The training covers such topics as
driver attitude and knowledge of bus routes,
emergency evacuations, highway rail grade
crossings, and loading and unloading, vehicle
training and student management, including
students with special needs. NHTSA has also
posted a Child Safety Restraint Systems on
School Buses training video on its website

www.stnonline.com/go/857. Six modules
covering the basics of child safety restraint
systems (CSRS) include specific information on
rear-facing and forward-facing seats and safety
vests. The training is available in English and
Spanish and is intended as an introduction to
proper use of CSRS in school buses and as a
