Bullying
According to a new Character Counts Study by the Josephson Institute of Ethics (the largest ever undertaken of the attitudes and conduct of high school students),  nearly half (47%) say they were bullied, teased, or taunted in a way that seriously upset them in the past year. The study reports the responses from 43,321 high school students. Nationally statistics have shown in the past that  32% of students reported being bullying during a one year period.

Bullying awareness is on the rise and this unacceptable behavior is alive and growing in many of our schools. An anti-bullying policy and program is part of a comprehensive safe schools plan. Resources are available to help schools educate and implement anti-bullying programs.

What You Can Do to Help End Bullying...National Suicide Prevention Lifeline

While bullying doesn’t cause suicide, a stressful environment and persistent, emotional victimization can increase a person’s risk of suicide. Together, we can create awareness about the dangers of bullying and give emotional support to those who may be contemplating suicide. If you or someone you know is in an emotional distress or suicidal crisis, please call the Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

    Bullying Curriculum
FREE RESOURCE Operation Respect is a non-profit organization working to assure each child and youth a respectful, safe and compassionate climate of learning where their academic, social and emotional development can take place free of bullying, ridicule and violence. Founded by Peter Yarrow of the folk group Peter, Paul & Mary, the organization disseminates educational resources that are designed to establish a climate that reduces the emotional and physical cruelty some children inflict up on each other by behaviors such as ridicule, bullying and-in extreme cases-violence.
Operation Respect disseminates the DLAM programs free of charge. More than 150,000 copies of the program have been distributed to educators since Operation Respect's inception.

Owning UpThe Owning Up™ Curriculum provides a structured program for teaching students to own up and take responsibility — as perpetrators, bystanders, and targets — for unethical behavior. The curriculum is designed for adolescent groups in schools and other settings.

The Owning Up™ Curriculum presents a unique and comprehensive approach to preventing youth violence by targeting the root causes of bullying and other forms of social cruelty. It exposes the cultural expectations that teach young people to humiliate and dehumanize others as the way to achieve power and respect, then challenges them to transform this dynamic. The program also addresses the nuanced ways in which racism, classism, and homophobia are expressed in our culture and affect social cruelty and violence
